Product Care Guide
Looking after your Orvane Victoria pieces properly will keep them looking their best for seasons to come. Here's everything you need to know, organised by material.
Always check the care label first
The care label sewn into each garment is the single most reliable guide for that specific piece. Our pieces span a wide range of fabrics, constructions, and finishes, and care instructions can vary even between items of the same type. The guidance below covers general best practice — but the label on the garment always takes priority.
Knitwear — cashmere, wool, cable knit, cotton knits
- Hand wash in cool water using a mild wool or cashmere detergent, or dry clean
- Do not wring or twist — gently press excess water out with a towel
- Reshape while damp and lay flat to dry, out of direct sunlight
- Store folded, never hung — hanging stretches the shoulders and distorts the shape
- Use cedar blocks or lavender sachets to deter moths
- Pill removal: use a cashmere comb or fabric shaver, never scissors
Dresses — silk, satin, lace, embellished
- Dry clean most delicate dresses, especially those with lace, sequins, beading, or structured bodices
- Hand wash simpler styles in cool water with a gentle detergent when the label permits
- Never tumble dry — air dry on a padded hanger, away from direct sunlight
- Iron inside out on the lowest suitable setting, or use a steamer for delicate fabrics
- Store on padded or wide hangers to preserve the shoulder line
- Let embellished pieces air out after wear before returning to the wardrobe
Linen — dresses, shirts, trousers, blouses
- Machine wash on a gentle cycle in cool water, or hand wash
- Wash with similar colours — linen can release excess dye on first few washes
- Hang to dry while slightly damp to minimise creasing
- Iron while damp on a medium-to-high setting for best results
- Embrace the natural wrinkles — linen's character improves with wear
Outerwear — coats, jackets, parkas, blazers
- Wool coats and tailored jackets: dry clean only, usually once per season
- Puffer jackets and parkas: follow label instructions — many are machine washable on a gentle cycle
- Leather-look and faux leather: wipe clean with a damp cloth, never machine wash
- Store in breathable garment bags during off-season, never plastic
- Use cedar or shaped hangers to maintain the silhouette
- Spot-treat stains promptly — the longer a stain sets, the harder it is to remove
Shirts, blouses, and tops
- Machine wash on a gentle cycle in cool water, inside out
- Use a mesh laundry bag for delicate blouses and embellished tops
- Iron while slightly damp for the crispest finish
- Hang to dry where possible — tumble drying shortens fabric life
- Treat stains immediately; avoid harsh bleach on coloured items
Trousers, skirts, jumpsuits
- Tailored trousers and structured skirts: dry clean to preserve shape and creases
- Casual trousers and everyday pieces: machine wash cool, inside out
- Hang trousers by the hem clips or folded over a bar to avoid creases mid-leg
- Iron jumpsuits with care around pockets, seams, and waistbands
Footwear — leather, suede, trainers, boots
- Leather: wipe clean with a damp cloth, condition every few months, polish occasionally
- Suede: use a suede brush to lift dirt, spray with a suede protector before first wear, never expose to water
- Trainers: spot clean with a soft brush and mild soap, remove insoles and laces to deep-clean
- Boots: store upright with boot trees or rolled towels to maintain shape
- Always allow shoes to rest for 24 hours between wears — this extends their life dramatically
- Treat waterproofing annually for leather and suede footwear
Accessories — handbags, sunglasses, scarves, hats
- Handbags: store stuffed with paper or a dust bag, never hung by the straps
- Sunglasses: always store in the case provided, clean lenses with a microfibre cloth
- Scarves: fold loosely, avoid sharp creases, dry clean silk and cashmere styles
- Hats: store on a stand or stuffed with tissue to preserve shape
Swimwear
- Rinse immediately after swimming in chlorinated or salt water
- Hand wash in cool water with mild detergent
- Never wring — gently press water out with a towel
- Lay flat to dry, out of direct sunlight
- Avoid sitting on rough surfaces while wearing — snags and pulls are the leading cause of swimwear damage
General dos and don'ts
- ✓ Rotate pieces rather than wearing the same item repeatedly — fabrics recover better with rest
- ✓ Wash less often — airing garments and spot-cleaning often gets more wear out of them
- ✓ Use a quality delicate detergent — harsh detergents fade colours and break down fibres
- ✗ Don't over-wash denim — jeans improve with minimal washing
- ✗ Don't hang knitwear — always fold
- ✗ Don't iron embellishments directly — iron inside out on a low setting
- ✗ Don't store dirty clothes long-term — stains set and attract moths
